Go to The Move
You are now ready to select your moving partner. After thanking you for the business, the first question your service provider will likely ask you is the desired date when the shipment has to arrive in India.
Remember that your presence in India - to receive your shipment - is mandatory. When we say "you", we mean the person in whose name the shipping papers will be prepared. If you plan to arrive in India previously but have to travel out again when the shipment arrives in India, the container can most likely not be cleared until you return. The shipment will then have to be stored and additional charges will incur. It is best to plan your individual travel schedule correctly before committing a date to your shipper.
Let us say that your desired shipment arrival date in India is June 15. Your service provider will then work backwards to select a “sailing date”. Shipments take about 8 weeks to travel by sea from the US. The most popular ports are Seattle and Long Beach in the West; Houston in the South West; and Miami, Savannah and Newark on the Atlantic coast.
Shipments that travel the Atlantic typically stop over at a major European hub such as Rotterdam before proceeding to western Indian ports such as Mumbai or Goa, via the Suez Canal. Shipments that travel via the Pacific stopover in a major port such as Hong Kong or Singapore and arrive into eastern Indian ports such as Chennai or Vishakapatnam.
After checking with shipping lines, your shipper may say that a sailing date of April 21 is feasible. He will confirm this date only if you pay him 50% of his estimate up front - so that he can book a container berth with the shipping line.
Allowing for 5 days for your container to travel from your home to port, your shipper suggests that April 16 can potentially be the date when he can pick your shipment up.
Assuming 2-3 hours to load items into the container, this means that all of your goods must be packed and ready to go by late morning on April 16th.
And there you have your own D-day - the day that your shipment will get picked up. Everything must be ready by this day. Your plan now is to get ready for this day.
